What is Antimicrobial Resistance and Stewardship?

Antimicrobial Resistance

Germs that make humans sick can also make animals sick. Many of these germs are able to spread from one group to the other. Drugs used to treat these germs are often the same for people and animals. This is a concern when Antimicrobial resistance occurs in one group because it can also spread.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a problem facing people and animals around the world. You may have heard about antibiotic resistance from your doctor or veterinarian. This is a part of AMR that looks at just bacteria. AMR happens when germs are able to change in a way that stops drugs from killing them. AMR can cause longer, more serious illness, higher health care costs, and even death.

Antimicrobial Stewardship

One way to fight AMR is with Antimicrobial Stewardship. Stewardship is the proper use of drugs used to treat infections. Programs to promote this are common in human hospitals but not in the veterinary setting. The BuckeyeASP Program was made to change this. Our program is built to partner with vets in Ohio to bring stewardship programs into their clinics. Stewardship programs will improve patient care and help to protect your pets and your family from AMR germs. Find out if your vet is a partner practice here.
