How Can I be a Good Steward?

How Can I Help?

Did you know that you can work with your vet in the fight against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)? Here is how:

Wellness Care

Keeping your pet healthy and safe can decrease the risk of AMR by avoiding infection. This can be done with:

  • Yearly well-check vet visits
  • Up-to-date shots
  • Flea/tick/worm prevention
  • Good nutrition

Illness Care

Take you pet to the vet when they are sick. Your vet can identify the problem and give you a safe treatment plan. If you pet has a virus they will not be given antibiotics because these will not work. If your pet has a bacterial infection, they may be prescribed antibiotics.

If antibiotics are prescribed:

  • Follow your vet's instructions
  • Do not share your pet's drugs or give them to another animal
  • Let you vet know how your pet is doing. If your pet gets worse or does not improve, contact your vet right away.

Good Hygiene

Good hygiene practices can decrease the spread of germs in people and animals. Be sure to:

  • Wash your hands frequently, especially before and after touching, feeding, or cleaning up after your pet
  • Clean up pet waste daily
  • Provide clean water and a cooked commercial diet for your pet
  • Keep pests out of your home
